The fall 2022 anime season has begun and shonen fans are spoiled for choice this year. More than just these popular and highly anticipated series, the fall 2022 lineup also includes plenty of potential underdogs who could steal fans’ hearts. These dark horse anime are not to be overlooked, and fans of the slice-of-life and romance genres won’t be disappointed.
10/10 The bibliophile princess offers hope to romance fans
Based on a bestselling light novel series, Mushikaburi Hime (bibliophile princess) follows Elianna Bernstein, a noble young woman who would rather spend her time buried in books than attend a ball. Fortunately, the Crown Prince, Christopher, has just made the proposal: if they get engaged, she can spend her days in the palace archives without worries, but that also means that she is now a princess consort.
Shojo and josei anime haven’t received the same amount of attention and number of adaptations in recent years as other genres. With its cute visuals and even cuter romance, the new Bibliophile Princess Madhouse’s adaptation will satisfy romance and shojo anime fans who may have felt a little needy.
9/10 Eternal Boys is a new take on the Idol genre
Eternal boys follows the titular idol group not made up of dreamy teenagers, but middle-aged men (35-45). These men may be hobbyists in the idol industry, but they have a wealth of experience from their previous jobs that just might give them the edge they need.
While the idol genre is somewhat saturated, Eternal boys takes a unique angle and is sure to bring a combination of heartwarming and comedic moments. Liden Films, the studio behind Tokyo avengershave put together this original anime series that will engage idol and other anime fans.
8/10 More than a married couple, but not lovers, it gives the vibe of the 90s
More than a married couple, but not in love is a new romantic comedy channeling 90s nostalgia. The series is based on a popular seinen manga and is sure to pique the interest of fans of My darling dressing.
Jiro Yakuin, in addition to normal high school struggles, has to contend with a couples training program where students must interact with a partner as if they were married in order to develop the social skills needed to thrive in a real marriage. Instead of being paired with his crush, Jiro is stuck with Akari Watanabe. Although they initially dislike each other, they agree to team up and achieve a high score in order to be fixed with people they actually like.
7/10 Urusei Yatsura is an unexpected remake
Rumiko Takahashi is a well-known manga author with several successful series under her belt, including Inuyasha, Ikkoku Houseand Ranma 1/2. However, his illustrious career began with Urusei Yatsura in 1978, receiving its first anime adaptation in 1981. Fans who might find the original outdated will enjoy this remake from David Production, the studio behind JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Urusei Yatsura follows Ataru Moroboshi, who accidentally finds himself engaged to the alien Oni princess, Lum, when in reality, he had planned to propose to his girlfriend, Shinobu. Lum moves in with Ataru, and antics ensue. The series was a pioneer for other animated romantic comedy series, especially harems, and had a lasting impact on the genre.
6/10 Shinobi No Ittoki aims to stand out among Shonen heavyweights
Troyca animated Shinobi No Ittoki, a new take on the ninja genre centered on the life of Ittoki Sakaruba. Ittoki leads a seemingly normal, if not dull, life until he discovers that he is the rightful heir to the legendary Iga Ninja clan. He is then sent to Japan’s only national ninja school to study the craft while avoiding several assassination attempts on his life.
This anime season has more than enough great shonen releases to fill any fan’s schedule. Even so, fans will still find ways to branch out and explore overlooked series such as Shinobi No Ittokiwell worth their time.
5/10 Raven Of The Inner Palace Offers Something For Fans Of Historical Fiction
Light novel adaptations are taking center stage this fall, with some exciting series planned. Inner Palace Raven aims to stand out among them and will delight lovers of historical fiction.
Inner Palace Raven centers on a mysterious figure known as the Raven Consort. No one knows his true form or true power, but the current Emperor Kushun takes it upon himself to find out. Little does he know that their meeting is destined to change history forever.
4/10 Do it yourself! Is too cute
Do it yourself! is an original anime produced by Pine Jam and a nice blend of slice-of-life, comedy, and edutainment entertainment. The series is quite similar to Relaxed campand fans of the former should definitely give this new series a try.
Serufu Yua lives in a world where the complete automation of work is an imminent and ever-present threat to the kinds of DIY arts and crafts she loves. This heartwarming series follows Yua and several other high school girls persevering through difficult DIY projects, refusing to give up or get lazy.
3/10 I’m the villain, so I tame the final boss is another villainous hit from Isekai
Fans may first roll their eyes at the thought of another anime villain isekai, which has become an increasingly popular subgenre. Still, I’m the bad guy, so I tame the final boss always manages to bring something new to the table. This wildly popular light novel has finally received an anime adaptation that is sure to satisfy romantic comedy and isekai fans alike.
Aileen regains memories of her previous life and realizes that she has become trapped in a game. Also, instead of being the game’s protagonist, she is actually the villain doomed to a sad off-screen death at the hands of the game. of the final boss. Determined to survive, she finds her best bet is to ally with the demon lord himself and possibly capture his heart in the process.
2/10 Akiba Maid War Subverts Fan Expectations
Akiba Maid War was one of the big surprises of this anime season. Unsuspecting fans thinking this series will be a cute maid-café comedy about a slice of life will be in for a shock. The series is an original anime produced by PA works and Cygames and features dark and refreshing comedy that contrasts well with other anime released this season.
Set in late 90s Akihabara, Nagomi Wahira is about to start her dream job in a pig-themed maid cafe. However, she soon discovers that there is much more to the world of maid cafes in Akiba than cute uniforms and animal ears.
1/10 The Eminence In Shadow Could Be Isekai’s Next Hit
When Cid Kagenou is reborn in a world of magic, he is ready to seize his opportunity and realize his dream: to become the real mastermind pulling all the strings from the shadows. Cid strings together a web of lies in order to build his following, but unbeknownst to him all of his lies are actually true, and he has now become a major player in a very complicated power struggle.
Eminence in the shadows is a highly entertaining and popular light novel series with a large fan base. The anime adaptation is produced by Nexus and has the potential to be the newest isekai hit series.
