Amazon’s £30 wall hack transforms mum’s DIY bedroom and saves £250

Although normally one of the smallest rooms in a home, decorating a bedroom can often be quite tedious and expensive – with wooden furniture, especially bed frames, not are not cheap at all. But if you get a little creative, there are ways to get around these problems and get the bedroom of your dreams without the exorbitant costs.

That’s exactly what mum Julie Phillips, 50, managed to do after she decided her bedroom needed something more. She had her heart set on a huge full-wall wooden headboard, with Scandinavian-style panels, but couldn’t believe how expensive an oak headboard was, at over £200.

So Julie decided to get creative instead, reaching out to Amazon to look for a cheaper alternative. She told the DIY On A Budget UK Facebook group: “The inspiration for the headboard was actually the natural oak interior doors in my house!

Julie’s room looked very simple before the change

“I love the look of natural wood, it’s so stylish and elegant. I wanted a very similar headboard with a Scandinavian look. I looked at a lot of headboards online, but they were so expensive.

“The oak slatted headboard I loved online was £259 for a super king size bed so I figured there had to be a cheaper way to achieve this look without spending a fortune As an avid DIYer, I love nothing more than decorating and creating new ideas in my home.

“So I started scouring the internet, looking for ideas. When I came across Fresco Natural Wooden Slats wallpaper on Amazon, it was exactly what I was looking for. I ordered two rolls of wallpaper at £12.49 each, a Craftright knife and wallpaper paste.

“When the wallpaper arrived I played around with a few ideas. I cut lots of strips from the wallpaper and layered them until I finally got the perfect match.

The job was completed in less than a day, transforming the space

“I found that by simply removing the black edge of the wallpaper roll with a craft knife and creating an angled trim to match the exterior color of the headboard, it worked perfectly.

“As soon as I added the trim above the wallpaper it transformed the look and gave it a beautiful framed headboard finish. I’m absolutely sold on how it turned out.

“It gives my bedroom a warm and cozy Scandinavian feel, which is exactly what I wanted. The wallpaper is so easy to hang and match, and it took just over an hour to get the look. finished.

Julie got stuck in the wallpaper, saving hundreds of pounds in the process

“Just adding some green plants to the room completed the look of the white and wood, creating the Scandinavian look I wanted. My next job will be to add some beautiful wall sconces to the side of the headboard for complete the look.

“The total cost was under £30 which was so affordable, especially on a shoestring budget. I’m sure I saved so much money compared to buying a new headboard, and I I can always recreate a new headboard by changing the It was definitely a more affordable option.

After everything is finished, the wallpaper looks like the real thing

“It just goes to show that if you shop around and play around with a few ideas, you can get a great quirky, unique look for a fraction of the cost!”

Tom Church, co-founder of, comments: “Julie’s idea is brilliant! Not only did she save a fortune buying a brand new headboard, but she gave us all a masterclass in coming up with innovative ideas that don’t take long but look great.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if this nifty idea catches on and becomes a trend!” »
