Burberry shows ‘animal instinct’ with deconstructed spring trench coat

British fashion house Burberry deconstructed its camel trench coat for its spring line for women on Monday, removing the sleeves and, in some cases, its back. The collection, titled “Animal Instinct”, saw Creative Director Riccardo Tisci reinvent the brand’s signature piece, adding short capes, transforming lapels into long scarves, cutting slits and making coats without collar or bottom.

In a video shared online, models, some with glued drooping animal ears, also wore dresses and shirts with colorful abstract geometric and camouflage-like prints. They walked through different spaces – including a rave and a room stuffed with trench coats – instead of the traditional podium.

“To me, this presentation really represents the freedom of our imagination: how we dream of coming to life,” Tisci said in a statement. “I wanted to walk through a series of immersive spaces, each unique and unexpected in its sound, texture and experience. It’s this idea of switching between the endless realities and fantasies that we have at our fingertips every day.”

The creator dedicated the show to his mother, who died last month, “and to a journey full of new possibilities.” Tisci, who targeted a younger clientele with younger sporty looks, added oversized hoodies to the Spring / Summer 2022 line and layered his casual designs with sheer and mesh tops.

There were also oversized vests, plenty of long, wavy bangs, and bodycon tops and leggings with cutouts. One model wore a sparkling silver bodysuit. For his color scheme, Tisci mainly used beige, fawn, brown, black, and white with pops of pink, red, orange, and yellow for the geometric patterns.

Accessories included high caps and necklaces.
