Minecraft Announces Batman DLC Featuring Nightwing, Batgirl, and More

Minecraft is adding a number of iconic Batman characters in a new DLC pack, along with a huge recreation of the crime city of Gotham.

Minecraft receives a new Batman-Themed DLC to celebrate the imminent launch of WB Games Montreal Gotham Knights.

The official Minecraft Twitter account shared the news directly after the DLC pack was announced during the Minecraft Live event. The update will see the Caped Crusader officially arrive in the blocky Minecraft universe, along with other select heroes and villains like Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, Harley Quinn, The Joker, and Poison Ivy. It will also include a huge recreation of Gotham City, allowing players to explore and fulfill their various Batman– themed fantasies. The full DLC set is paid, although all players will receive a free Batman cap to use in the character creator. It will be available for download on all platforms from October 18.

The output of Batman DLC aligns with the imminent release of Gotham Knights on October 28, an action-brawler game that will see the Dark Knight’s closest allies take on a consortium of classic villains. The story is set after the murder of Batman and highlights the Bat Family’s fight for justice as they attempt to protect the city from itself. Developer WB Games Montreal recently decried the early release of a Gotham Knights strategy guide that leaked critical plot points that he hoped to keep secret before the game officially launched.

Despite Gotham Knights giving players control of some of the most iconic faces, fans have expressed reservations about certain character designs. Social media users were quick to criticize a recent video showcasing Harley Quinn’s new look, which sees the villain appear older and more like her ex-lover The Joker. Others have taken aim at characters like Jason Todd/Red Hood for new designs that they feel deviate too much from the source material.

Minecraft is the world’s best-selling video game, with over 238 million copies shipped since its launch in 2011. Although the game’s extensive creative tools and sandbox nature have meant Batman characters have appeared in a limited capacity before, the new DLC will be the first time they are featured in an official capacity. Players regularly create and post remarkable projects using Minecraftsprawling mechanics, including the construction of PokemonAll nine regions complete with Gyms, Wild Roads, and NPCs. Another innovative creation that gained popularity online was a Minecraft version of Microsoft Paint, which allowed players to “use” the program in their home world.

Minecraft is available on most consoles and mobile devices. Gotham Knights will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on October 28.
