Mark: Miu Miu
Season: Spring / Summer 2022
Editor’s Notes: Miu Miu, a brand that has kept its distance from sneaker collaborations, is embarking on the lucrative business of co-signed shoes.
At Paris Fashion Week, Prada’s sister brand ignited the fashion world with its dangerously low-rise bottoms, a throwback to the year 2000 that overshadowed an equally remarkable development: a Miu Miu x New Balance 574.
True to the no-frills nature of New Balance’s classic running shoe, Miu Miu revamps the silhouette with raw-edged panels, giving the timeless sneaker a bit of a directional edge.
The collaboration is entirely new territory for the Italian fashion house, better known for their ballet flats and pointy heels than their sneakers. Neither Miu Miu nor its Creative Director – the one and only Miuccia Prada – have explained the reasoning behind the brand’s foray into the sneaker hype.
Of course, I have my own ideas. Miu Miu has never seen resounding success with any of her sportier shoe silhouettes – her crystal-encrusted low-cut shoes and adjacent FILA platforms aren’t exactly grails, to put it mildly.
Working with a sneaker brand valued for their footwear expertise was probably a no-brainer, given Miu Miu’s difficulty in winning over hype-conscious consumers.
Sure, the brand’s gigantic furry ski boots caused a stir earlier this year, but at the end of the day, that’s really buy them ? A collaborative sneaker is more practical, and generates just as much buzz.
It’s not yet clear when the Miu Miu x New Balance 574 will be released, and neither brand has released official images of the sneaker. Watch this space for updates and in the meantime, refresh yourself on the best shoes and accessories of Fashion Month.
