Manitowish Waters – The North Lakeland Discovery Center is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a series of expansion projects to help it better serve the community.
“It’s not just Manitowish Waters. It’s a regional organization. We have members, supporters and volunteers all over the Northwoods,” said Rolf Ethun, the North Lakeland Discovery Center fundraising coordinator. .
The Discovery Center aims to connect people with the Northwoods and appreciate nature. New buildings and renovations will give the center the ability to do just that.
“What elements of nature are at play and why does this matter to us today in our lives? As people learn more about the environment and the Northwoods in which they live, they tend to make better decisions about it, ”said John Heusinkveld, executive director of the North Lakeland Discovery Center.
One of the ways the Discovery Center does this is through publicly accessible programming. A few of these programs include historic canoe and pontoon trips on the lake and winter snowshoeing animal tracking activities.
“If you like being outdoors, if nature means anything to you, you should come to Discovery Center because we have a program related to it,” Heusinkveld said.
The center is building a new facility to accommodate on-site programs year-round.
Construction is slated to begin this winter if they reach their fundraising goal by then. So far, they have raised over $ 3 million, but they hope to reach $ 4 million soon thanks to the more than 500 individual donors who have contributed to the campaign so far.
“It’s extremely rewarding to feel and know that people care so much and are ready to do it,” Ethun said.
The center is less than 10% of its fundraising goal. Once this goal is achieved, they can begin construction of the building that will serve the inhabitants of the region.
If you would like to donate to the Discovery Center, you can call them or find more information on their website.
