THE holiday season and the search for gifts have begun for many, and Crafty Mugs can help shoppers create the perfect mug to suit any personality.

Samantha Rajkumar, from Marabella, San Fernando, is the founder and creative director of the brand, which was born out of her desire for independence – to earn her own money, using the skills she already had to start her own business.

Crafty Mugs, an online business, offers custom hand-painted mugs and glasses that can be personalized to the customer’s vision.

“I don’t think anyone on Instagram was doing this service, so I had a very good chance of doing it because it was a unique product,” Rajkumar said. “I posted my first product, which was a Rick and Morty mug, on my Instagram page and with the help of my friends it got shared multiple times and got my first sale.”

She therefore began her professional career in 2019.

A final year student of veterinary medicine at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Rajkumar has loved art since childhood.

Rajkumar, who attended San Fernando Central High School commonly known as “Modsec”, said, “In my free time, I used to paint on canvas to ease the stress of school. However, I never really practiced other art forms, aside from what I did in art class in high school until ninth grade.

The 25-year-old started looking at mug paintings by YouTubers who made and sold their wares on Etsy’s website.

Etsy is an e-commerce platform where people come together to make, sell, buy, and collect unique items. Her favorite YouTuber is Marko Terzo, known for his specialization in customization and DIY art, who has over 5.4 million subscribers.

“Looking at my favorite artists on YouTube and watching burst cup videos, I became inspired.

“I came across a video on how to make money painting mugs and other products. It automatically flipped a switch in my brain that maybe I could do it too. However, I didn’t never thought I would do it as well as I do today.

“I did a lot of research, bought the necessary products and started painting in 2019.”

Having made many custom requests, she is open to requests for new products from customers. Its prices start at $100 and go up to around $400, depending on the level of detail the design needs.

“Depending on the design, I take between an hour and a few days. However, on average, I can take five hours.

“I make mugs, bottles, teacups, teapots, beer mugs, and glass and glass plates. I also got a request in the past to customize a Hotwheels for someone who was a collector, which surprisingly I really enjoyed doing.

His most complex design is an Alice in Wonderland teapot, which took seven hours to complete. She painted the Red Queen, the White Rabbit’s famous watch, the Mad Hatter’s hat and the Cheshire Cat on it.

“The Cheshire Cat has got to be my favourite. The colors used weren’t very common colors I usually paint with for custom orders, so it was perfect for a change.

Explaining her creative process, she said, “First I start creating my stencils. Once I’m happy with that, I transfer to the cups and start painting. Once my painting is done, I seal the painting in place and it’s done.

Deliveries to Southpark, San Fernando and surrounding areas are free, and orders are delivered to other areas by courier for a fee.

She recently launched a TikTok page for her business due to an algorithm change on Instagram.

“My products aren’t reaching customers like they used to, so I’m trying a different platform to reach more people.”

She hopes to be able to extend her activity to more painted products than simple glasses. Rajkumar buys mugs from a local store, but also plans to carve mugs herself.

“Also, I’m adding 3D art on mugs, where I sculpt designs on the mugs with clay. I hope to add them in 2023. I also hope to be able to do some international orders one day.

Rajkumar’s advice to creators who are inspired by his work and want to create art or create similar work is: “It never hurts to try! Just because you don’t have any experience in this area doesn’t mean you aren’t good at it. Once you love what you do and keep perfecting your craft, you will definitely succeed.

“I aspire to make clients smile by bringing their ideas to life through my art.”
