Spin the Spring Cleaning Recycling Mission – Germiston City News

During your spring cleaning, it’s always nice to consider who you can help.

Rather than throwing away all your unwanted goods, Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of RE / MAX of Southern Africa, encourages South Africans to donate and recycle their unwanted household items that others may need.

“After spending so much time at home this year, you may have cluttered your home with junk from your current hobbies and probably have wardrobes full of unworn clothes. With the onset of spring, now is the perfect time to find responsible and sustainable ways to get rid of unwanted goods, ”suggests Goslett.

Here are some sustainable and useful ways to support your community as you declutter closets and drawers this spring:

1) Donate instead of throwing away
As you go through the closets and tackle the outdoor shed, keep in mind that you can donate most things: clothes, shoes, furniture, appliances, children’s toys, sports equipment and more. Again.

Most local libraries and bookstores accept new and used books. Alternatively, hospitals and nursing homes could also use new reading material.

Some donation centers and organizations even offer door-to-door pickup services to safely recycle products during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2) think about animal shelters
Most linen items have a lifespan and can only be washed a certain number of times before it is time to replace them.

Instead of throwing them away in the local landfill, determine if they are in good enough condition to donate to a local animal shelter. Your local animal shelter can still use old sheets and towels as bedding for the animals they house.

From messy accidents to chewing bedding, shelters and rescues go through many blankets. Your extra bedding can keep dogs and cats warm and comfortable.

3) Upcycle with DIY
Before you get rid of old clothes or other knick-knacks, ask yourself if there is a way to reuse them.

Old clothes can double as dust clothes or can be made into something entirely new with a little creativity and some sewing skills. A new coat of paint on an outdated piece of furniture can do wonders.

To create more of a statement piece, paint a geometric design or pattern on the furniture. The possibilities for reusing items are endless.

Before you throw away an item, do some DIY recycling research to get ideas on how to reuse it.

4) Depersonalize before selling

“Spring cleaning is a vital step for those who are selling soon. Depersonalizing the space is something all sellers should do before putting their property on the market.

“Not only will this make it easier for the buyer to imagine themselves in the space, but decluttering as much as possible will make the home more spacious and more attractive to buyers.

“As an added bonus, decluttering will help homeowners prepare for the upcoming move and their donations could help those in need as well,” he said.
