Robert Norton Noyce (December 12, 1927 – June 3, 1990), nicknamed “the mayor of Silicon Valley”, co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957 and Intel in 1968. He is also credited (along with Jack Kilby) with the invention of the integrated circuit or microchip. While Kilby’s invention is six months old, neither man has rejected the title of co-inventor.

[…]Noyce and Gordon E. Moore (chemist and physicist) founded Intel in 1968 when they left Fairchild Semiconductor. The relaxed culture that Noyce brought to Intel was a transfer of his style to Fairchild Semiconductor. He treated the employees as a fulfilling family and encouraging teamwork. His “Follow your Bliss” management style has set the tone for many Valley success stories.

Intel’s headquarters building, the Robert Noyce Building in Santa Clara, California, is named in his honor, as is the Robert N. Noyce ’49 Science Center, which houses the science division of Grinnell College.

[…]In July 1959, he filed for US Patent 2,981,877 “Semiconductor Device and Lead Structure,” a type of integrated circuit. This independent effort was recorded just a few months after the main discoveries of inventor Jack Kilby. For his co-invention of the integrated circuit and its impact on transforming the world, three Presidents of the United States honored him.

He will eventually accumulate sixteen patents to his credit.

Noyce received the IEEE Medal of Honor in 1978 “for his contributions to the silicon integrated circuit, the cornerstone of modern electronics”. In 1979 he was awarded the National Science Medal. In 1990, the National Academy of Engineering awarded him its Draper Prize.

If the award sounds familiar to you, it’s because NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang received the Robert N. Noyce Award from the Semiconductor Industry Association a month earlier.

Sapphire Radeon RX 6600 PULSE (Non-XT) shown and listed online, will include 8 GB of memory and an anticipated price of 589 euros

To be honest, I never imagined I would receive the Noyce Prize. It is the honor of a lifetime. Having this recognition from my peers in the technical community is a rewarding experience. But I love what I do and being able to contribute to the semiconductor industry.
